Enchanting transformation
Lecture by Florian Zierer, Caruso St John London/Zurich
Lecture, Days of ArchitectureThe London-based architecture firm Caruso St John is one of the most renowned British architecture firms. The firm has earned a special reputation for its handling of historic buildings. Florian Zierer writes: “Whether consciously or unconsciously, we have always understood our works as transformations. Whether they were created in dialogue with existing architecture, as extensions or conversions, or as new buildings in an urban space or landscape, what all projects have in common is that the transition from one state to another takes centre stage and that we always look for the points of reference for the transformation in the given context. For us, the extent of the change is of great importance, as it is the basis for evaluating the design.”
The talk by Florian Zierer will present recent projects by the office, explains their specific context and the processes of remodelling.
About the office
Caruso St John Architects was founded in 1990 by Adam Caruso and Peter St John in London, with a further branch in Zurich. The practice has become internationally renowned for its redesign of historic buildings such as the Tate Britain and Sir John Soane's Museum, both in London, the baroque monastery church in St. Gallen and the Haus in den Bergen in Switzerland. They have received numerous awards for their work, including the Stirling Prize. Adam Caruso at ETH Zurich and Peter St John teach at London Metropolitain University.
Florian Zierer has been working for Caruso St John Architects in London since 2006 and was appointed partner in 2013.
Florian studied architecture at the TU Carolo Wilhelmina in Braunschweig, where he also graduated, and at the ETSA in Madrid. He worked for Hans Kollhoff in Berlin and taught with Adolf Krischanitz at the UdK Berlin, the University of the Arts.
