Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky
Architecture. Politics. Gender. New Perspectives on Her Life and Work
Book presentation, DiscussionMargarete Schütte-Lihotzky (1897-2000) is known as Austria's first female architect, a pioneer of social architecture, designer of the Frankfurt Kitchen, activist in the women's movement and, last but not least, as an important figure in the resistance against the Nazi dictatorship. Beyond all the myths, a book now also published in English brings together the latest research from the fields of art and contemporary history, education and gender studies and paints a more nuanced picture of the architect. It sheds light on her diverse architectural oeuvre, her transnational experiences and professional networks, her political career as a communist and her current reception.
What significance does Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky's work have for students, architects and (architectural) historians today? What is the relevance of her life? Architectural historian and co-author Antje Senarclens de Grancy (akk TU Graz) will explore these questions together with editor Bernadette Reinhold.
