For the 22nd time, the Architecture Prize of the Province of Styria will be awarded in co-operation with the House of Architecture (HDA), which is endowed with prize money of € 10,000. The purpose of the prize foundation is to promote contemporary, high-quality architecture in Styria. The Styrian Architecture Prize is awarded following a public tender and the decision of a curator. The prize is awarded to a building erected in Styria within the last 2 years.
Curators 2025 The prize is awarded by decision of a curator. For the Architecture Prize of the Province of Styria 2025, the Styrian Provincial Government has appointed SO? architecture and ideas as curators.
SO? architecture and ideas was founded in 2007 by Sevince Bayrak and Oral Göktaş. Their work ranges from small-scale interventions to major public building projects. In addition to their architectural practice, the duo is also involved in teaching as well as curatorial and conceptual projects. They gained international attention in particular as curators of the Turkish national pavilion at the 2023 Architecture Biennale in Venice.
The Architecture Prize of the Province of Styria 2023 goes to Architektursalon andsu.n SPACEUNITNETWORK for Salon Stolz.
Statement by the curators Sevince Bayrak and Oral Göktaş:
This project reveals the strength of architectural re-programming, inserting an unexpected cultural layer into the everyday life of a seniors’ residence. By embedding an interactive museum at its entrance, the design disrupts routine with curiosity and exchange.
Though modest in its architectural scale, the intervention at Salon Stolz demonstrates an exemplary impact on the urban fabric. Strategic urban decisions—such as removing the park fence, redefining the entrance axis through a new canopy, and opening the building façade—significantly amplify the project’s contribution to public life by directly integrating the park with the existing complex. Through the use of simple yet effective architectural elements—such as a canopy, an openable façade, and a bench—it takes a bold step in transforming a previously closed-off area into a publicly accessible space. Salon Stolz serves as a compelling model for how small-scale interventions can catalyze broader urban renewal and social engagement. The space invites intergenerational dialogue and shared presence—something architecture often aspires to, but rarely conjures so organically.
Its story is not easily photographed. Given the challenge of adding a third architectural layer to a building already shaped by two distinct stylistic periods, the design integrates seamlessly into the existing fabric. There is no spectacle here—only the slow weaving of architecture into life itself, where meaning accumulates not in form and scale, but in use. This is a project that listens more than it speaks.
Honorable Mentions were awarded to the following projects:
City hall Kapfenberg tmp architekten, Arch. DI Dr. Uli Tischler, Arch. DI Martin Mechs
This project represents a meticulous effort to preserve an iconic building—not an icon of form, but of function, as the city's cherished ice rink. The design and execution demonstrate a strong commitment to the building's original role, maintaining its character while sensitively integrating contemporary additions. The thoughtful renovation, including new entrances and a redesigned roof, revitalizes the structure by strengthening its connection to the city, particularly through the adjacent square.
Vocational School of Agriculture and Forestry Grottenhof ARGE LFS GRO: Caspar Wichert Architektur + OSNAP Open South North Architecture Practice
This project stands out for its successful integration with both the existing landscape and the built environment. The agricultural school building, part of an organic farm with a coherent programmatic structure, is elaborately incorporated through a design approach that embraces the existing elements as assets rather than constraints. The architecture skillfully creates a learning environment, treating the pre-existing structures as integral components of a renewed and cohesive setting.
Academic Secondary School Reininghaus j-c-k, Arch. DI Sandra Janser
This project is an outstanding example of how architecture can respond to the evolving educational paradigm—one that can no longer rely solely on traditional, frontal learning environments. The cluster-based system, successfully integrated with open spaces, offers diverse and flexible learning settings that support alternative educational approaches and student engagement.
Tree House konstruktiv – Studio für Architektur, DI Julia Fröhlich & Arch. DI Wolfgang Timmer
This project offers a compelling vision of how architecture can align with and enrich non-traditional forms of tourism. It is a small-scale intervention that seeks not to dominate the environment and nature, but to blend with it. The elevated structure, carefully designed in response to the steep topography and existing trees, offers visitors an immersive spatial experience—allowing them to engage with nature from within, while minimizing disruption to the landscape and its inhabitants.
