Stefan Devoldere: Designing (through) Policy
VortragHow can good design foster good policy? And how can policy provide a context for high-quality architecture and urbanism? Formed as an architect and urban planner, Stefan Devoldere has been stimulating and safeguarding the quality of the built environment in Flanders as an adviser for policy makers and administrations. As former State Architect of Flanders and current city architect of Ostend, he has helped local municipalities and government institutions to develop a framework for their architectural and urban projects, putting urgent societal issues on the political agenda and championing design as a useful instrument for policy in housing, care, spatial planning, etc. He will talk about the tools of the Team Vlaams Bouwmeester, the exhibition “The Ambition of the Territory” that was shown at the Venice Biennale in 2012 and his work at the coastal city of Ostend.
Stefan Devoldere (BEL) is an engineer-architect and urban planner. He writes about architecture and urbanism on a regular basis in Belgian and international publications. He participated in the Belgian contribution to the International Architecture Exhibition La Biennale di Venezia in 2008, 2010 and 2012. He was curator of several international exhibitions on architecture, such as "Laurent Ney. Shaping Forces" and "Robbrecht & Daem. Pacing through Architecture". From 2004 till 2010 he was the editor of the Belgian architectural review A+. From 2011 till 2016 he safeguarded and stimulated the quality of the built environment in Flanders as deputy and acting Vlaams Bouwmeester (State Architect). Currently he is presiding the Stadsatelier Oostende, an expert platform that develops a framework for innovative housing projects and a long-term vision for city development in Ostend.
